fuck it, I have to mention this article.
Anime erotic subculture goes mainstream - MSNBC

It's like one of those fake SA articles, but funny.

sexually-suggestive and explicit anime like "Gurren Lagann" and "Legend of the Overfiend,"
hahaha

“The appeal of Japanese pop culture [to Americans] is that it is a moral-free zone,” explains Patrick Macias
I actually sort of agree with this. If Japcrap helps future generations of Americans develop a less black-and-white worldview, it would be a good thing.

“Lolicon” (or Lolicom, a combination of “Lolita” and “comic”)
YOU MORONS IT'S "COMPLEX"
oh wait what I meant to say was, I have never heard of this 'lolicom' before.
I thought it meant "rolling computer"

Wow, I thought ill-informed articles like these went out with the term "Japanimation"! Good to see they're still alive and kicking!
JAPANIMATION...Because it's animation...FROM JAPAN!
Oh America, you're so clever!

Patrick Macias is a pretty fantastic person. A bunch of my friends write for Otaku USA and they all say that he's pretty fucking powerful as a human.

I remember really enjoying one of his blog entries from a while back, but I can't find it now. His avatar is beautiful, too.

sexually-suggestive and explicit anime like "Gurren Lagann"

standard issue anime tit jiggles are explicit
i like how it's in the same sentence as urotsukidoji

"are all part of otaku, a Japanese word that has evolved from meaning "techno-geek" to describing devoted fans who pore over Japanese animation and comics."

uhhhh not to be overly analytical of an article one would immediately dismiss as a joke but didn't it come from "house"? as in, "loser who never leaves the house"?

oh but who cares TECHNO-GEEK is more IN THE NOW

lolicom is also in the now, get with the now vera, the now is wow.

additionally,

says 32-year-old otaku expert Lawrence Eng

what a great thing to be an expert of

don't make fun of the otaku experts, they will be in great demand when the manga section of borders turns everyone in america into a technogeek.

Play and fantasy are more important than actually having sex with a real person. [lol] Among some otaku, love and sex in the anime realm become vicarious experiences, more satisfying than real life, Macias says.

“Among Japanese fans — the guys — it is a badge of honor to say, ‘We do not need real women; [these] figures are better, they do not talk back’” said Macias. “Americans are not there yet, but at the rate things are going, we are going to be seeing that.”

OH SHIT I hope not... although I have glimpsed some dudes online who seem to qualify. :\ "badge of honor" is code for "they still cry themselves to sleep at night".

I like that he thinks that Takashi Murakami's work is part of otaku culture, rather than creating art that comments on it... okay dude.

'Never thought in a million years that I'd see Gurren Lagann grouped with Legend of the Overfiend! ^o^ Hell, Gurren Lagann didn't even have a sex scene-- they should have put GANTZ in there.

Come onnnnnn where's the tentacle porn in my mecha series??

“When you see a kid sitting in Borders reading a manga, he’s not just reading a comic book,” Macias said. “There is something really powerful going on there.”

Isn't there some rule of fail about mentioning Overfiend these days. I mean, it's about 3 decades old now, or something?
