Reply to this meme by yelling "words!", and I will give you five words that remind me of you. Then post them in your journal and explain what they mean to you. Keep in mind that if I don't know you that well, your words might end up kind of esoteric/oblique.
1. "Headworld"
This is my most hated phrase among creative types, and I have no idea how it got popular. I have no idea why this phrase bugs me so much, it just sounds so impossibly dumb and cutesy-poo. I don't have "headworlds". I have stories, characters, and concepts. Go up to any famous writer and ask them how they came up with their "headworlds" and see the kind of reaction you get.
That said, I enjoy writing, I enjoy coming up with characters and worlds- I'm still not as happy with my actual narrative skills as I'd like, but I can't say I'm not trying. I'm really trying to push myself out of my comfort zone lately to force me to think of things in a different way, I think that stagnation is the greatest problem that any creative person can face.
2. Finks.
Do you want to know the real reason that finks are such a recurring theme for me (I mean, aside from the fact that they're a blast for me to draw and design)? I'm very interested in the role of animals in symbolism/iconography/anthropomorphism- for example, when you see the image of a wolf, or a dog, or a rat, there are already very strong societal and literary connotations to all of these creatures. "Lone wolf". "Loyal dog". "Sneaky rat". Whether you directly believe that these adjectives apply to these creatures or not doesn't mean that you are immune from the subconscious associations- even with mythological creatures, we face the same connotations. The fierce and powerful dragon. The pure and beautiful unicorn. The courageous gryphon. I use this sort of symbolism and iconography extremely heavily in my writing- but in terms of personal visual symbolism, I enjoy using a creature that does not have these ingrained interpretations. That doesn't mean that I can't think of adjectives to apply to finks- but there aren't preexisting generations of literature and visual art that act as a canon to their interpretations.
3. Caring
I don't think I'm a particularly caring individual- I just don't really see the motivation that people have in doing things to deliberately hurt others. Does it give you power over them? Do you think it contributes to a pleasant atmosphere around you? Obviously no one is immune to tendencies of irritation and exasperation in certain situations, but really, for the most part, I enjoy treating others how I like being treated, myself. I've been around negative and hurtful people long enough to know that if you don't want to perpetuate that cycle of cruelty, the most powerful thing you can do is look at your own behaviour and both question your motivations of why you do things, and what kind of treatment you would like to receive in turn from others.
4. Gifts
I like giving small gifts to people- it's not a huge investment of time, it's something I enjoy doing, and it helps keep me busy/hones my skills by drawing things I wouldn't normally draw.
5. Friends
They're pretty great! I learned a while back that if there's someone you admire or who inspires you in some way- don't keep them at a distance, try to bring them into your life if you think that their personality, insight or work is inspirational or valuable! I think that too many people hold others at a distance, or build them up to be 'above them' and impossible to approach- I don't really think this is true, people are still just people. I don't really have as many close friends as people think- but the handful of really, really close friends I have, mean the world to me (and they know who they are)- I find them (and a lot of other people!) to be hugely inspirational to me with their courage, kindness, and perseverance.
Hopefully that tells you a bit about me.
Now, back to work.
